Event 2: Fall Family Night at Concord Street

This event was at my work- Dr. Day Care Pawtucket Concord. We had fall family night, which is our version of lights on after school for an early learning childcare center. This event took place on 10/26. When I first got to this center, family participation was little to none. We had, unfortunately a very small turnout. Out of 100 children in my school there were only four to show up. (This is two more than last year! Yay!) The point of this evening is to be an open house, invite parents in to see their children art work hanging, do a fun craft or hands on activity in each room, see the staff and have some refreshments after school and work hours.

I could post signs and flyers and send out email blasts all day long, and it is at times pulling teeth to get families to stay for an event. This is near and dear to my heart, and one of my goals to grow in this center. Here is to hoping next year grows even more- as my staff and the children are always excited to show off their accomplishments!

I believe no matter the age of the child, if they can share "their space" with their parents, mentor, guardian etc. then the children have something to be proud of themselves for, some sort of instant gratification for youth. I believe it is very important for a child to feel important themselves where they have created their own things and spend much of their time away from their parents.

There are a lot of stereotypes of youth/young people. After reading the three articles, one stereotype that stuck out was that youth are inexperienced. Another stereotype is that youth are lazy, and are defiant towards those that are older than them. According to the reading by Bogad, when youth started to attend public school more and not stay at home and help there, they began to be with more people their age and settle into their adolescence. In the article by Steinberg, it was mentioned people feared what youth would do next- and they were always wild, even a "nightmare" to adults.In the third article written by Meyerson, black females are perceived older than what they are at a very young age. The article told of one girl who was arrested for using a student subway card because the police thought she was older than what she said- based on her appearance, which ended up making her go into therapy because of the ordeal she was put through. There are a few points in Restler's article that stood out to me as part of care. She states, "the work of keeping kids in mind, remaining attuned to their needs and perceptions even when they're not present.." (pg 5) This was meaningful to me in the way of caring for youth, because it is so beyond important to remember that these kids have lives out side of your youth setting (group home, care group, school, programs, etc.) that make up more time of their lives than that short time you are with them. You have to keep in mind what they might have just gotten off the bus from, what happened before dinner last night, or what just happens in their minds day to day. They are humans first, not just robotic students or clients. The teacher that that uses her haircut and sense of style as part of mending that gap between adult vs. youth is just a prime example of keeping their needs in mind and staying "attuned" to it. Adultism..... I had to really think about a time when an adult took away my free ability to make choices for myself, specifically a time in which it really stuck with me and made a lasting impression. I have often, by my parents, been guided to make my own choices and they supported me. Obviously, if it was an unsafe circumstance or something that would physically harm me they did not support or encourage but I was also not a youth or teen to really look down those types of path anyways. Even as a youth in high school my teachers were supportive and encouraging. That is, why I assume, I had such positive, lasting, close relationships with so many of my educators and still continue to ten years later. I can remember one teacher I had in third grade. I was used to such open free play, while learning an immense amount through socialization, play, and discovery but this teacher did not work this way.
